Two Ways to Earn on Residential Meters

Brokers earn a commission when a residential customer pays their invoice. Energy Ego calculates a base commission using monthly kWh and then applies the applicable compensation structure based on how that paid customer ranks for the month.

Personal Customers
1¢ / kWh
100% of the personal commission

Every broker is building their own business. Brokers keep the full 1¢ per kWh on their qualifying personally sponsored residential customers, except for the five network positions.

  • ✓Applies to qualifying personally sponsored customers outside positions #2–#6.
  • ✓Commission is earned only when the customer pays their invoice.
  • ✓Common personal customer example payouts are shown below.
1,000 kWh$10 at 1¢ per kWh
3,000 kWh$30 at 1¢ per kWh
5,000 kWh$50 at 1¢ per kWh
Network Customers
0.2¢ / kWh
20% of the base 1¢ commission

Network customers are the customer payments ranked #2 through #6 each month. Those five paid customer positions receive the network rate of 0.2¢ per kWh.

  • ✓Exactly five monthly network positions are illustrated in the plan.
  • ✓The ranking uses qualifying paid customers, not just enrollments.
  • ✓Common network customer example payouts are shown below.
1,000 kWh$2 at 0.2¢ per kWh
3,000 kWh$6 at 0.2¢ per kWh
5,000 kWh$10 at 0.2¢ per kWh

How Energy Ego Ranks Residential Customer Payments

Energy Ego will rank the oldest customers first based on their enrollment date for each product. Only customers with a qualifying monthly payment are included in that month’s ranking.

What this means each month

Brokers earn a commission when a customer pays their invoice each month. Energy Ego calculates commission at 1¢ per kWh for each qualifying residential customer payment, then determines whether that paid customer falls into a personal or network position based on the enrollment-date ranking for that product. The five network positions are the paid-customer ranks #2 through #6.

Commercial Compensation Structure

Commercial compensation is shown in three parts: a base commission, a sponsor commission, and any additional commission that the broker negotiates and adds to the commercial enrollment form.

What are mils?

A mil is one-thousandth of a dollar per kWh (0.1¢). Brokers use mils to express small additions to an electricity rate.

10 mils= 1¢ per kWh
5 mils= 0.5¢ per kWh
3 mils= 0.3¢ per kWh

Commercial Compensation Payout

Base Commission 0.3¢

Starts at 0.3¢ per kWh and is included in the commercial matrix.

Sponsor Commission 0.1¢

Set at 0.1¢ per kWh and included in the commercial matrix.

Additional Commission Broker Negotiated

Not included on the commercial matrix. The broker can add this additional amount on the commercial enrollment form.

Where to add broker-negotiated mils

Use the Additional Broker Mils field on the commercial form to add the extra negotiated amount to the rate. The highlighted area below shows exactly where that value should be entered.

⬇ Enter your additional broker mils in this highlighted field
Commercial form example showing Matrix Price, Additional Broker Mils, Contract Price, and Contract Term fields.
Example: if you negotiate 5 additional mils, enter 5 in the Additional Broker Mils field. With a matrix price of 6.743¢/kWh, adding 5 mils (0.5¢) produces a contract price of 7.243¢/kWh.

About the Energy Ego broker compensation plan

This Energy Ego compensation plan webpage is built to help residential and commercial energy brokers understand how commissions are earned. Residential commissions are earned when a customer pays their invoice, and customer ranking is based on paid-customer status and enrollment date by product. Personal customer positions outside the network group receive 1¢ per kWh, while the five monthly network positions (#2 through #6) receive 0.2¢ per kWh. The page also summarizes the commercial compensation structure, Energy Ego’s 3% commission fee, and the official Texas PUC resources relevant to broker registration and compliance.
