Ohio Utility Account Numbers

Switching electricity or natural gas suppliers in Ohio usually requires a utility-specific enrollment number. Depending on your utility, that may be called an Account Number, Customer Number, Service Delivery Identifier (SDI), or Choice Service ID. This guide shows which number to use and where to find it on your utility bill.

Reviewed: October 6, 2026 · Enrollment identifiers should always be verified against your current utility bill.

Important: Do not automatically use the account number printed at the top of your bill. AEP Ohio and Duke Energy, for example, use specific service identifiers for retail supplier enrollment.
Quick answer: AEP Ohio generally uses a 17-digit Service Delivery Identifier (SDI), Duke Energy Ohio uses a 22-digit Choice Service ID, AES Ohio uses its utility account number with supplier-specific formatting, and Ohio Edison, Toledo Edison and The Illuminating Company use a 20-digit Customer Number. The exact number depends on your local utility.

4 Ways to Find Your Ohio Utility Account or Service Number

1

Check your current bill

Use a recent paper bill or PDF bill. This is usually the best source because it shows the exact utility identifier tied to the service location.

2

Sign in online

Open your utility's online account and view or download the latest bill. The enrollment number may appear on the bill even when the dashboard shows a different account number.

3

Use the utility app

If your utility offers a mobile app, look for billing documents, account details or a downloadable bill.

4

Call customer service

Ask for the exact supplier enrollment identifier needed to switch electricity or natural gas providers in Ohio.

Ohio Natural Gas Account Numbers

Ohio's competitive energy market also includes natural gas choice in eligible utility territories. Columbia Gas of Ohio uses a 15-digit Account Number, Enbridge Gas Ohio (formerly Dominion Energy Ohio) uses the legacy 13-digit account-number format referenced in supplier guides, Duke Energy uses a separate 22-digit natural-gas Choice Service ID, and CenterPoint Energy uses an account number with special enrollment formatting. Always match the identifier to the gas utility and supplier instructions.

Account Number vs. Meter Number: Do Not Confuse Them

Your meter number identifies the physical electric or gas meter at the property. It is generally not the number a competitive supplier needs to enroll your account. Supplier enrollment normally uses a utility-specific Account Number, Customer Number, SDI or Choice Service ID.

Paperless billing?

Sign in to your utility account and download the most recent PDF bill. The PDF often contains the enrollment identifier even when the online dashboard does not display it prominently.

Just moved?

Wait until the utility account is active, then check your online account or call the utility and ask for the identifier required for competitive supplier enrollment.

Old bill?

A recent bill is best. Account identifiers can change after a move, account transfer or utility-system update.

Why Your Ohio Supplier Needs This Number

The utility identifier connects a supplier enrollment request to the correct service account. Choosing a competitive supplier changes the company providing the energy supply portion of eligible service; your local utility continues to handle delivery infrastructure and utility billing functions as applicable. Providing the wrong identifier can delay or prevent an enrollment.

Privacy tip: Treat your utility account number, SDI, Choice Service ID and customer number as private account information. Share them only when necessary with your utility or a supplier/broker you intend to work with.

Ohio Utility Account Number FAQs

What number do I need to switch electricity suppliers in Ohio?

It depends on your local utility. AEP Ohio uses an SDI, Duke Energy uses a Choice Service ID, FirstEnergy utilities use a Customer Number, and AES Ohio uses its account number with the enrollment formatting described above.

Is my utility account number the same as my supplier enrollment number?

Not always. This is especially important for AEP Ohio and Duke Energy customers. Use the utility-specific identifier shown in this guide and confirm it on your current bill.

Where is the AEP Ohio SDI?

For Ohio Power, the 17-digit SDI is generally on page three below Current Charges and begins with 001400607. Columbus Southern Power uses a 17-digit SDI that generally begins with 00040621.

Where is the Duke Energy Choice Service ID?

For electricity, look on page three in the Current Electric Usage box. Natural gas has its own separate Choice Service ID in the Current Gas Usage box.

What number do Ohio Edison, Toledo Edison and The Illuminating Company use?

These FirstEnergy Ohio utilities use a 20-digit Customer Number, generally beginning with 080, shown in the applicable “Charges From” section of the bill.

Can I use an old bill?

A recent bill is best because it reflects your current account and service information. If your account has changed, confirm the identifier with the utility before enrolling.

Can I find my Ohio utility account number online?

Usually. Sign in to your utility's online account and open or download the latest bill. The bill may contain the supplier enrollment identifier even if the dashboard shows only a shorter account number.

Is my meter number the same as my utility account number?

No. A meter number identifies the physical meter. Supplier enrollment generally requires the utility-specific Account Number, Customer Number, SDI or Choice Service ID.

What if I just moved and do not have a utility bill yet?

Once your utility account is active, sign in online or call the utility. Ask specifically for the identifier needed for competitive supplier enrollment.

What if I use paperless billing?

Download the latest PDF bill from your utility's online account. PDF bills usually contain the same account and service identifiers that appear on mailed bills.
